Ideal Position:
My ideal job would combine editing and proofing late-breaking financial or political reports with preparing documents for online and print publication. I also enjoy working with popular culture and media, and advertising. I'm computer- and web-literate, so I'd like the opportunity to exercise and expand my technical skills with tools like InDesign. I like high-energy urban environments with a lot of involvement in what's current in the economy, politics, and culture. As a contractor, I'm accustomed to dealing with emergency deadlines and high volume, and I've grown to like it. I'm introverted, like most copyeditors, but I get along well with co-workers. I prefer being a self-starter.
Past Experience:
My favorite jobs have been in world financial news, advertising, and popular culture. My most recent job has been with a lifestyle magazine, as both copyeditor and writer. I'm very good at editing material written by non-native speakers of English. I have edited and proofed everything from engineering specs to advertising copy and economic reports.
Currently:
My most recent Paladin contract was with an advertising company in San Francisco. I proofed camera-ready layouts, edited ad text for compliance with each client's stylesheet, proofed ad text for accuracy, and checked all links and references. I also edited in-house documentation and client communication. This was a very satisfying job for me. Like most copyeditors, I have a range of knowledge that's wide and eclectic, and I've found this to be very useful. More importantly, though, I really enjoy copyediting. Many people in this field fall into it from other interests, but I genuinely choose it and derive enormous satisfaction from it. I love this kind of work, and I'm very good at it.
