We are all in the throes of the holiday season. Regardless of whether you are ahead or behind on your shopping, decorations, family plans, cooking or sleeping, I know we are all looking forward to a little down time so we can recharge our batteries and get ready for what should be an exciting 2014.
As marketers, it will be an interesting year from the moment the Times Square ball gets put back in its case. Right after the holidays we have the Super Bowl in New York. I’m sure the world’s largest single-day sporting event in the world’s most dynamic city will add something special to both the spectacle and the Super Bowl ads that some people enjoy more than the game.
The Winter Olympics in Sochi, March Madness and the FIFA World Cup in Brazil quickly follow. Think about the media impact of that many high-decibel events happening in just a few months. Couple that with the regular goings-on like the Oscars, Grammys, movie releases, world events, and whatever the stars are up to this week, and wow! It certainly will crowd an already dense marketing environment, and that puts even more pressure on all of us to come up with creative, messaging and valuable content that resonates and cuts through the chatter. As Robert Passikoff puts it in his recent Forbes’ article, “A new year provides brands with a chance for new resolutions and new beginnings,” and it certainly will be interesting to see what 2014 will bring.
I know that everyone here at Paladin wishes you and yours a safe and happy holiday season. Get some rest – it sounds like we’re going to need it!
